Welcome Kristy Peloquin to Our Board of Directors

We are delighted to announce the newest addition to our board, Kristy Peloquin, a dedicated educator and fundraiser with a passion for empowering students from diverse backgrounds. Kristy brings a wealth of experience and insight into the challenges faced by Learning Bridge students. Her commitment to supporting these students aligns perfectly with Learning Bridge’s mission to provide tailored academic support through one-on-one tutoring. We are grateful to have her on the board guiding Learning Bridge to serve more foster and unhoused youth in our community.

Below, Kristy shares her personal perspective on why she has joy joining our team and contributing to our mission of fostering academic success among vulnerable Central Texas youth.

Greetings, Friends!

As a long-time educator of English and writing at the community college level, I have seen students from many walks of life as they are starting their academic journeys. For some, college is easy. They have no trouble with the environment of the classroom, reading, doing homework, or understanding the concepts. For others, it is a completely different story.

When students arrive in the college classroom, they bring with them all the life experiences they’ve garnered along the way – both positive and negative. Their histories, the stories of their past, become part of the narrative of their present. For those who grew up in the tumultuousness of the foster care system, this can be especially true, as the shadow of that experience can be quite long indeed.

Of the many personal essays written by students who had experienced life in foster care that I have read over the years, a common thread (and a thread that helped them arrive in my college classroom) was that someone – a teacher, a mentor, a tutor, a caring adult – helped them along the way. Someone stepped up to be the source of support they so desperately needed, and it changed the course of their lives.

I’m thrilled to support Learning Bridge as a board member because they understand that children in foster care face many challenges to their academic success and require unique support and care. Learning Bridge knows how incredibly important one-on-one tutoring by tutors who are trained to work specifically with this community can be.

My ardent wish is that Learning Bridge can continue to thrive so that more children can be served and ultimately more children in foster care can experience academic success. Often, one small taste of success, one small boost of confidence, one kind helpful adult can be the spark that ignites a passion for learning – and that is a gift all children deserve.
