Celebrating LB Volunteers: The Heart of Learning Bridge

As we approach National Volunteer Week, April 20-26, Learning Bridge is filled with gratitude for our incredible tutors who dedicate their time and hearts to helping children in foster care and homeless shelters. These volunteers are the backbone of our mission, providing not only academic support but also a sense of stability and care that these children often lack.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Volunteer Tutors

To our existing tutors, we want to express our deepest appreciation for your unwavering commitment and dedication. Your role goes beyond just teaching; you are mentors, friends, and role models who inspire hope and confidence in the lives of these young learners. Your impact is immeasurable, and we are honored to have you as part of our community.

The Challenge Faced by Our Students

Children in foster care and homeless shelters face unique challenges that can hinder their academic progress. Frequent changes in foster placements and schools lead to instability, which can result in lower academic achievement and a higher likelihood of dropping out. Moreover, these youngsters often struggle with a lack of confidence and hope for their future, making them more vulnerable to the cycles of crime, poverty and homelessness.

The Impact of Our Volunteer Tutors

Our volunteer tutors are more than just educators; they are the catalysts for change in the lives of these children. They work tirelessly to ensure that each child receives the personalized attention they need to catch up academically and build confidence. Whether it’s helping “Sarah” grasp complex algebra concepts or encouraging “Jax” to read aloud with confidence, our tutors make a tangible difference in the lives of these young learners.

“I am having a great time tutoring Sarah! Each week we go through what she learned in lecture… and she has made a lot of progress!” one tutor shared. Another noted, “Our sessions have gone from lasting 20 minutes to lasting a full hour! Jax always wants to work on his homework with me now and is starting to be more comfortable reading out loud in front of me!”

But what truly sets our volunteer tutors apart is their genuine care and dedication. As one tutor beautifully expressed why she tutors: “I want to expand my love of teaching beyond the walls of my classroom. I want to be a source of joy, inspiration, and comfort for these students.” This sentiment encapsulates the heart of our tutors, who go beyond mere academic support to provide emotional comfort and inspiration that creates closer bonds and unity in our communities.
